What will the gynaecologist do during your initial visit?

During the first visit, the gynaecologist will engage in an open conversation with the patients regarding their health and expectation from future appointments. Generally, it doesn’t include a pelvic exam. In case of health issues like heavy or painful periods, they will suggest certain tests.

The gynaecologist will ask a number of questions to understand whatever ways they can provide the help. Sometimes, you may find these are embarrassing to discuss it openly. Honesty is pertinent.

If you are along with your parents they will ask for waiting outside during the interrogation session. The gynaecologist ensures the confidentiality of the information while encouraging you to discuss it with the parents as well.

Apart from a question on the last period and your age to receive the first period, you can receive the questions on:

  • Irregular periods
  • Period cramps
  • Uncomfortable itching
  • Sexual activity
  • If you use condoms or any other birth control methods while doing sex

You may feel surprised that they are taking interest in your full health. Also share if you are suffering from depression, having sleeping apnea or losing weight.

Which exams they will perform?

Firstly, you will need to undergo a general physical screening. It includes weight, heart rate and blood pressure. For this, you may have to undergo blood tests as well. It assists the gynaecologist to know if you have conditions like prediabetes.

For sexually active persons, tests for STIs are essential. It may be tough for you to consult openly on sex but it is important. Sexual health is necessary and so you need to be honest about it. Then you will proceed for an external genital test and the gynaecologist looks extensively at the areas around the vagina (vulva). Sometimes, you may need a bimanual exam.

In this process, the gynaecologist will insert 2 lubricated fingers into the vagina for checking the abdominal condition. They also test for ovaries and uterus as well for figuring out the development of any cysts or abnormal growths. It is not painful at all even though slightly discomfort. Always consult with the gynaecologists before your first appointment to make it a positive experience in the end!

Do they conduct Pap smears?

Basically, a Pap smear needs to do after 21 years of age. However, if you have any issues such as itching, pain or heavy periods then you may need to do it a bit earlier to intervene of the cause.

What will happen at the time of the Pap smear?

Gynaecologist inserts speculum gently into the vagina at the time of Pap smear test. It incorporates holding the vaginal walls stretched to offer a good view of the cervix. It refers to the area within the vagina and uterus. Then with the help of a tiny spatula or small brush gynaecologist collects the suspicious cervical cells to examine them under a microscope.
